Replacement License Plate in Massachusetts

What is a License Plate Replacement in Massachusetts?

Replacement in Massachusetts means obtaining a new physical license plate issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) outside the regular registration renewal cycle. The RMV considers this a separate transaction with its own fee of $10 per plate, separate from the renewal or transfer process. Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 90, § 6 requires the owner to apply for a new plate when the plate is lost, damaged, or illegible.

  • Trigger conditions: a plate that is lost or stolen, physically damaged, faded or illegible, or no longer valid because the vehicle has moved from another state or changed class.
  • Lost or damaged plates retain the same plate number. Stolen plates do not retain; the RMV issues a completely new set with a new number, and the transaction must occur in person at an RMV Service Center.
  • Massachusetts is a two-plate state (front and rear for motor vehicles, rear only for trailers). You can replace one plate for $10 or order both at $10 each.
  • A plate that fails inspection solely due to a design defect is replaced free of charge (Chapter 90, § 2).

When Do You Need to Replace Your Massachusetts License Plate?

The RMV expects you to act as soon as the plate becomes unfit for use. Chapter 90, § 6 does not set a deadline in days but requires the owner to apply for a replacement and temporarily mount a plate with the registration number.

  • Missing plate (lost or stolen) triggers an immediate replacement obligation. If the rear plate is missing, you must move the front plate to the rear and create a temporary front plate with your registration number.
  • Stolen plates must be reported as stolen before the RMV processes a replacement. The RMV replacement page directs owners of stolen plates to an in-person visit to the Service Center. Lost plates do not require a police report.
  • Damaged or faded plates that are no longer legible are subject to the same replacement. The RMV also notes illegible plates during vehicle inspection.
  • New residents must register within 30 days of acquiring a residence, business, or employment in Massachusetts (Chapter 90, § 3).

How to Get a Replacement License Plate in Massachusetts

The RMV replacement page outlines three channels: online via myRMV, by phone, and in person. Preparation is the same for all three.

  • Gather your plate number, vehicle registration number, and owner identification before starting. If the plate was stolen, prepare a reference to the police report.
  • Online: log in to myRMV at atlas-myrmv.massdot.state.ma.us, select “Replace my lost/damaged plate,” confirm your garage address, choose front or rear, and pay. You can order only one plate per online transaction. The portal does not process stolen plate replacements.
  • By phone: call the RMV Contact Center at 857-368-8000 (or 800-858-3926 from other Massachusetts area codes) and select the registration support option. Both plates can be ordered in one call.
  • In person: visit any RMV Service Center. Replacement of stolen plates requires this channel; the RMV will issue a new set with a new number on the spot.
  • After any order, the RMV sends a Plate Permit within 5-7 business days. The replacement plate itself is mailed to your address on record; expect about 12 weeks for manufacturing and delivery.

Can You Replace Massachusetts License Plate Online?

Yes, for lost and damaged plates. The myRMV portal covers the routine replacement case: you select damaged or lost as the reason, choose front or rear, pay $10, and wait for the new plate by mail. The portal accepts credit and debit cards.

Stolen plates are excluded from online ordering. Since the RMV assigns a new plate number for stolen replacements, this transaction requires an in-person visit to an RMV Service Center. The phone channel (857-368-8000) handles lost and damaged orders but not stolen plate cases.

One limitation worth noting: myRMV restricts each online transaction to one plate, front or rear. Replacing both plates means two separate orders or one phone call to the Contact Center.

If the online portal covers your situation, use it. For stolen plates or if you need both plates in one transaction, visit the Service Center.

How Much is License Plate Replacement in Massachusetts?

The fee structure is fixed and statewide, with no county surcharges. The RMV fee schedule (last updated May 2025) lists a single replacement rate for all vehicle classes.

  • $10 per plate covers passenger, commercial, motorcycle, trailer, and all other plate types. One plate costs $10; both plates cost $20.
  • Plates that fail inspection due to illegibility caused by manufacturing or design defect are replaced free of charge per Chapter 90, § 2.
  • Replacement of a registration card or plate decal is a separate transaction for $25, available online via myRMV or at a Service Center (RMV registration replacement page).
  • There are no additional fees for automation, technology, or processing. The $10 amount is the full state fee per plate.
  • A duplicate plate return receipt, if needed separately, costs $15.
