Massachusetts License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Massachusetts?

License plate renewal in Massachusetts extends an existing registration without changing the plate number or the plates themselves. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) issues a new registration card and a license plate sticker showing the updated expiration month.

  • Passenger vehicles renew on a biennial cycle covering two full years per renewal period. Motorcycles, trailers, and most vanity plates renew annually (M.G.L. c. 90 § 2).
  • Semi-trailers have a five-year registration for $300. Electric vehicles renew every two years at the same $60 rate as standard passenger plates.
  • Renewal is not a title transaction. The plate stays with the owner, not the vehicle, so title transfer upon sale requires a separate filing with the RMV.
  • Commercial vehicles are divided by weight: up to 5,000 pounds renew every two years, while over 5,000 pounds renew annually.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Massachusetts License Plate?

Registration expires on the last day of the expiration month shown on the license plate sticker. The RMV sends a renewal application about six weeks before this date, and the myRMV portal displays expiration on the account dashboard.

  • Early renewal window opens six months before the expiration date. Online renewals can be submitted anytime within this window without waiting for the mailed application.
  • Massachusetts does not offer a grace period. Operating a vehicle on a public way after registration expiration is a violation of M.G.L. c. 90 § 9.
  • The first offense is punishable by a fine of up to $100; subsequent offenses can reach $1,000 (M.G.L. c. 90 § 9).
  • The annual safety and emissions inspection at any of approximately 1,800 licensed stations statewide must be current. Vehicles with OBD systems less than 15 years old must pass the emissions inspection component. The RMV does not block portal renewal based on inspection status, but driving without a valid sticker is a separate traffic violation.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Massachusetts

Before choosing a channel, confirm active auto insurance is on file with the RMV, there are no unpaid parking tickets or property tax bills blocking registration, and a valid inspection sticker is current. The mailed renewal application will indicate if an insurance stamp is needed.

  • Online: Log in to myRMV with a MyMassGov account, select the vehicle, confirm the garage address, and pay by credit card, debit card, or bank account. The fee section below covers exact amounts.
  • By mail: Send the completed renewal application (with insurance stamp if required) and a check or money order payable to MassDOT to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, Attention: Mail-In Registration Department, PO Box 55891, Boston, MA 02205-5891. Allow at least 14 business days for the new registration and sticker to arrive.
  • In person: Visit any RMV Service Center with the renewal application and payment. Most locations accept walk-ins.
  • If you did not receive the mailed application, download the vehicle registration renewal form from the RMV website.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts does not charge a county fee or have a separate surcharge for electric vehicles upon registration renewal, so the state fee schedule from the RMV Schedule of Fees is the complete picture. The basic renewal is the easy part; unpaid property tax and additional fees for specialty plates can significantly increase the total beyond the standard passenger plate renewal.

  • Passenger standard: $60 every two years. Reserved plates renew at 100biennial(60 base plus $40 specialty fee).
  • Vanity passenger plates cost 80annually(30 base plus $50 specialty fee). Charity plates renew at $100 every two years, some at $110.
  • Motorcycles renew at $20 annually for a standard plate. Vanity motorcycle plates cost $70 per year.
  • Trailer renewal costs $20 per 1,000 pounds of registered gross weight, with a minimum charge of $20 billed annually. Mopeds renew every two years for $40.
  • The annual inspection fee is $35 for most vehicles and $15 for motorcycles, paid directly at the station (M.G.L. c. 90 § 33).
  • No late fee applies to the registration fee itself. Delinquent property tax causes a renewal block that can only be lifted after full payment plus a $20 release fee to the RMV (M.G.L. c. 60A).

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Massachusetts?

The RMV accepts online renewals for most passenger, motorcycle, commercial, and trailer registrations through the myRMV Online Service Center. The portal requires a MyMassGov Personal account, a valid plate number, and active insurance on file. Payment methods include credit cards, debit cards, and direct bank account withdrawal.

Renewals submitted online receive immediate confirmation. The new registration card and license plate sticker are mailed and typically arrive within 7-10 business days. Vehicles with suspended or revoked registration, or with outstanding parking tickets, property tax, or EZ-Pass violations, cannot renew through the portal and must resolve blocks first.

For in-person service, any RMV Service Center processes registration renewals. By mail, send the completed renewal form, insurance stamp if required, and a check payable to MassDOT to PO Box 55891, Boston, MA 02205-5891. If Massachusetts can process your renewal online, it’s the fastest route; the service center handles what the portal cannot.
